EES Research Groups and Laboratories

The Department of Energy and Sustainability has six research groups and laboratories coordinated by its faculty members:

..:: NTEELElectrical Energy Technological Center

The Electrical Energy Technological Center (NTEEL) operates in the field of electrical energy systems, aiming to contribute to the advancement of technology, quality, and efficiency in this area, meeting societal demands from the perspective of generation, transmission, distribution, and end-use of electrical energy.

Through collaboration between academia and Brazilian industry, NTEEL seeks to contribute to the country’s development by promoting research and technical and scientific production. Research results are transferred to relevant sectors through partnerships and specialized publications.

NTEEL Solar is the Solar Energy division of NTEEL and is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Giuliano Arns Rampinelli. NTEEL Solar develops scientific projects and research in the field of Photovoltaic Solar Energy and its applications.

..:: NUDAPECenter for the Development of Energy Production Processes

The Center for the Development of Energy Production Processes (NUDAPE) carries out projects in partnership with other science and technology institutions and industries – particularly in the state of Santa Catarina – as well as with institutions abroad.

NUDAPE was established in 2015 by Professors Dr. Elaine Virmond and Dr. Elise Sommer Watzko, from the Department of Energy and Sustainability at UFSC. Its teaching, research and outreach activities involve students from the undergraduate program in Energy Engineering and the Graduate Program in Energy and Sustainability (PPGES).

..:: LabCITEAApplied Thermal Sciences Laboratory

The Applied Thermal Sciences Laboratory (LABCITEA) is located in rooms 106 and 107 of the Mato Alto Unit of the Araranguá Campus.

The laboratory conducts reseach on:

  • Air conditioning and refrigeration systems by physical and chemical adsorption.
  • Desiccant and evaporative cooling systems for air conditioning.
  • Air conditioning and refrigeration systems by absorption.
  • Absorption and adsorption systems in cogeneration systems.
  • Heat pumps for industrial heating, by sorption, mechanical compression and hybrid.
  • Modeling of energy consumption in buildings.
  • Energy efficiency in microbreweries.

..:: LabEFLUTOXWastewater Treatment and Ecotoxicology Laboratory

The Wastewater Treatment and Ecotoxicology Laboratory (LabEFLUTOX) works in the area of studying and minimizing the environmental impacts caused by the extraction of natural resources, combustion of fuels, and industrial activities. Among other activities, LabEFLUTOX develops studies on the toxicological effects of gas scrubber fluids and gases derived from the burning of treated wood, as well as on the treatment of natural waters impacted by acid mine drainage and industrial effluents using biomass derivatives as treatment agents.
